In celebration of 25 years, as an inclusive arts hub serving the Waterloo Region's Art Community, Button Factory Arts exhibited a juried show where artists were encouraged to engage and entertain ideas on topical issues— the socio-cultural fabric of our diverse community and the things that hold us together.
Artists in all media were invited to reflect on risk taking, courage and the vulnerability involved in producing meaningful contemporary art projects throughout uncertain times. Given the existential challenges people have faced worldwide, many artists felt the need to connect and speak up, while increasingly engaging in activist and social art practices. With youth, indigenous communities and environmental movements arising, some countries have tried to face issues of climate change and migrations of people fleeing conflict, seeking a better life. Contributions by visual artists reflected on these impactful moments within our society, especially during a crucial time of transformation.
