Window + Mural Call

Button Factory Arts aims to reflect on contemporary Canadian identity during Canada’s Sesquicentennial through the production of a diverse range of inter-arts programming we are calling, Views/150. We are asking residents, “What is your ‘Canadian Identity’?” Our goal is to reach as many groups as possible and engage a diverse representation of our community.

Elements of the project will be presented in the weeks leading up to and over the Canada Day long weekend in 2017.

We will be accepting applications from both professional and emerging artists and feel it is important to represent both communities. The applicants will be responding to the question, “What is your “Canadian Identity”?

Proposals will aim to animate the inside of four gallery window spaces as well as for the design of an outdoor community mural.

Four artists will be chosen to represent a site specific installation in the gallery windows of Button Factory Arts Main floor space. VIEWS:150 will function through the installation of artworks made specifically for display accessible windows in Button Factory Art’s building. Each artist selected will have the opportunity to reflect upon themes of personal or collective national identity through visual representation. Work will be asked to consider the transparency of the windows, and should be visible from both inside and outside of the building. Artists submissions will be open to work in any media.

In addition to the window spaces we are asking artists propose a concept and design for an outdoor mural facing Laurel Trail to be produced on wood panels accumulatively measuring 120’ wide by 8’ tall. Artists will be responsible for the creation of the design as well as the production of the outline of the mural and with the facilitation of community painting. Materials will be donated, and participants Button Factory Arts will help to provide participants to take part in community painting.

We are expecting several thousand to take in Views 150 from the street, paths or adjacent buildings and parking spaces.
